  116.               This documentation is for release 1.4 of FileView.
  117.
  118.               FileView is a Microsoft Windows based tool that allows you to
  119.               browse files on your hard-drive or network drives.  Unlike
  120.               other Windows browsers, FileView does not load the file into
  121.               memory, allowing you to browse files that are larger than
  122.               available memory while leaving room for other windows
  123.               applications to run.
  124.
  125.               To use FileView, select a file to browse from the File/Open
  126.               dialog as you would select a file in any other windows
  127.               program.
  128.
  129.               Once you are browsing a file, you can scroll through it and
  130.               search for text using DOS style or Regular Expression style
  131.               search patterns.
  132.

  136.
  137.               The following notations are used in this manual:
  138.
  139.               [text]  is used to identify optional information.  If the
  140.                       option is not specified, the default action will be
  141.                       taken. An exception is in the discussion of the
  142.                       WIN.INI file.  WIN.INI section headers are identified
  143.                       as [text]                         [text]                         [text].  These sections are boldfaced to assist in
  144.                       their identification whereas [options] are not
  145.                       normally boldfaced.  Hopefully, context and the use
  146.                       of boldfacing will distinguish these two uses.

  193.               FileView is easy to install. Simply copy all distribution
  194.               files to the disk/directory where you want to run FileView
  195.               from.  This will usually be \windows.  Note that you may
  196.               install FileView in a directory that is not in your
  197.               environment path if you provide the path to the program
  198.               manager.  However, the FileView.hlp file must be in the
  199.               environment path for it be found when help is requested.  If
  200.               you install FileView in a path that is not in your
  201.               environment path, installing it in the \windows directory is
  202.               recommended.
  203.
  204.               All configuration options reside in your WIN.INI file.  All
  205.               of these can be set within FileView.

  216.
  217.               If you have installed FileView as a program under Filefind's
  218.               user defined menu, you may invoke it from Filefind and

  244.                   _                  Open        Invokes a dialog to choose a file to browse.
  245.                               The dialog consists of one edit field and two
  246.                               list boxes.  The file name with a path or
  247.                               wild cards may be entered.  If the file
  248.                               specification does not contain wild cards,
  249.                               FileView will attempt to open the file.  If
  250.                               the file specification includes wild cards,
  251.                               FileView will list all matching files in the
  252.                               path, and change the default extension to
  253.                               match the specification extension.  The
  254.                               extension will remain until changed again, or
  255.                               the program is terminated.  A file list box
  256.                               allows a specific file to be picked without
  257.                               typing the filename.  A directory list box
  258.                               allows the directory tree to be traversed and
  259.                               the disk drive to be changed.
  260.

  262.                               a series of pointers into the file the you
  263.                               are using. If this file becomes changed
  264.                               (because you are changing it with NOTEPAD for
  265.                               example), FileView will not display the file
  266.                               correctly.  The _                                              Refresh File command
  267.                               instructs FileView to reload its pointers so
  268.                               the file is correctly displayed.  This
  269.                               command is only needed if the file is changed
  270.                               while you are viewing it.
